Composite Bonding

What it is

Bonding is the direct application and shaping of tooth-coloured composite resin. There is no laboratory stage; the treatment is completed in one visit.

Its greatest advantage is reversibility: in most cases the tooth is not reduced, only the surface roughened. That makes it a good first step, particularly for younger patients, before committing to something permanent.

When is it used?

Small chips on front teeth, worn incisal edges, small gaps between teeth, mild differences in form and isolated colour differences.

For widespread discolouration, advanced wear and high bite forces, porcelain veneers last longer.

Longevity

Composite picks up stain more readily than porcelain and can look dull over time; coffee, tea and smoking accelerate that. Polishing or renewal may be needed every few years. In return it is easy to repair: a fractured area can be added to rather than replaced entirely.
