Which prosthesis, and when?
The choice depends on how many teeth remain, the state of the bone and gums, and the patient's daily habits. There is no single "best" prosthesis; each option has a cost and a benefit.
Fixed options
A bridge rests on the teeth either side of the gap. It requires those healthy teeth to be reduced, but cannot be removed by the patient and is easy to adapt to.
An implant-supported crown or bridge achieves the same stability without touching the neighbouring teeth. It requires surgery and a healing period.
Removable options
A partial denture is used where some teeth remain, supported by clasps or precision attachments.
A complete denture is used in a jaw with no teeth and takes its support from the gum. Retention in the lower jaw is harder to achieve than in the upper.
An implant-supported overdenture sits on two or four implants. It stays removable while largely solving the problem of movement.
The process
The first appointment covers an intraoral examination, radiographs and an assessment of any existing prosthesis. An impression follows — digital scan or conventional. Try-in appointments are scheduled during the laboratory stage: tooth set-up, shade and bite check. An adjustment appointment is given within the first week after delivery; correcting pressure points in a new prosthesis is normal and part of the treatment.
Getting used to it
Speech and chewing with a new prosthesis settle within a few weeks. Starting with soft food, reading aloud to retrain speech, and keeping the prosthesis in clean water overnight (unless your dentist advises otherwise) all help.
The gum and bone beneath a removable prosthesis change over time, so dentures typically need relining or renewal every five to seven years. An annual check-up catches that change early.

After treatment
- Brush your prosthesis under running water after every meal.
- Use a denture cleaner rather than toothpaste, which scratches the surface.
- If you remove it at night, keep it in clean water rather than dry.
- If it rubs or causes a sore spot, stop wearing it forcibly and book an adjustment.
- With a removable denture, clean your gums with a soft brush too.
- Attend a check-up at least once a year.
