Why the gums?

A smile is framed as much by the gums as by the teeth. Even with teeth of equal length, uneven gum levels make a smile look unbalanced. In some people more gum than usual shows when they smile (commonly called a gummy smile).

The cause comes first

Excessive gum display is not always caused by the gum. Upper lip mobility, the vertical dimension of the upper jaw, how far the tooth has erupted and its length are each assessed. Cutting gum without knowing the cause does not solve the problem and cannot be undone.

Bone level is therefore measured radiographically beforehand: if the distance between gum and bone (the biologic width) is not respected, the gum regrows after healing or permanent recession follows.

How it is done

Under local anaesthesia the gum margin is shaped to the planned line, and bone level is adjusted where needed. Laser or conventional technique may be used, chosen case by case.

Healing takes two to four weeks. If aesthetic restorations are planned, we wait for the gum margin to settle first.

After treatment

Apply cold on the first day and avoid hot food.
Be very gentle brushing the area in the first week; use the mouthwash advised.
Do not smoke for 48 hours; it directly delays healing.
Aesthetic restorations are not planned until healing is complete — please be patient.
